The one with the forsythia

High Park is a very! popular place for engagement photos during cherry blossom season.  But as luck would have it — due to timing and weather — Lorna & Wooyeong’s engagement session took place just a hair before the cherry blossoms were in full bloom.  Which meant that we got to shoot with vibrant yellow forsythia flowers (which usually bloom earlier) instead of pale pink Sakura ones.

This is okay with me because yellow > pink.  Mwahaha.  :)

This was the first time I officially incorporated dogs into a shoot.  Like babies and many young children, these pups weren’t really “into” looking at the camera.Or doing anything else we wanted them to do for that matter, hah! Here are examples of the not-blooming-yet Sakura trees:

And here are examples of…I’m not even sure what these are examples of, but I laugh every time I look at them!

Bring on the yellow!
Lorna is definitely what you’d call a “natural” in front of the camera.  And Wooyeong is what you’d call a good-looking accessory on Lorna’s arm.  ;)
Wooyeong does have a certain Asian-inspired resemblance to the Man of Steel himself…

The one with Macaron Attempt #8

I decided that something was fundamentally wrong with all my previous macaron-making attempts, so I tried yet another recipe for Attempt #8 (scaled to 100 g egg white).

The batter was much more liquid-y than my previous attempts due to the significantly different ratio of egg white to almond flour and icing sugar.  A lot less almond flour than I’ve used in the past.Baked at 300F for 16 minutes.

I got cracks!  Excitement!  I haven’t had this failure mode before, and I think I can actually diagnose this one (unlike the stupid blister I’ve been getting up to now):  meringue not stiff enough and/or not enough resting/drying time.

Ultimately, the crack rate was only about 50%, which meant the other 50% was…

…SUCCESSFUL!!!!!!!!!!!

Still some air bubbles and slight air pocket inside, but oodles better than the previous seven (!) attempts.  Tasty too — the Spousal Unit’s eyes actually widened in surprise when he popped a cookie into his mouth. Here are attempts #1 through #8.  Yes, I anticipated this day of success and froze samples of all my previous attempts just so I could take this picture.  That is how I roll.  Granted, I didn’t think it would take eight attempts…

I promise that there will only be photos of beautiful macarons from now on.  :)

The one with Dick Tracy

Red hot!
Aleli and Mark make a dashing couple.  Not many people can pull off hats with such grace and style!Even though it was unseasonably warm for mid-February, it was still really cold.  Props to Aleli for being gutsy enough to wear a skirt…and mad respect that neither Aleli nor Mark complained of the cold!  I had all my thermal underwear on and I was chilled to the bone by the end of our shoot.
But no pain, no gain, right?  We had hallelujah sunset lighting!

Aleli & Mark — as Simone would say, I am eversad that I’m not available to shoot your wedding, but you will be before my lens again in July for Alyssa & Justin’s wedding, *muwahahahaaaa!*

And thank you, Shereen for being my lovely assistant for the shoot — lugging all my crap around and making sure my softbox didn’t fly off into the lake.  You are very appreciated!
